What is Ludus Magna?

Ludus Magna is a strategic gladiator-management browser game inspired by the world of Spartacus. You run your own Ludus as a Lanista — recruiting, training, equipping, and commanding gladiators as they rise in fame, face rival houses, survive brutal arena fights, and build a legacy that outlives you. It blends simulation, progression, tactical combat, and story-driven events into a deep, replayable experience.

How does the game use AI for development and assets?

Ludus Magna is built by a solo developer, and AI tools play a crucial supporting role. Without AI-assisted coding and asset generation, a project of this scope would simply not be possible for one person. AI allows the developer to focus on what truly matters: the design, balance, and gameplay systems.
All visual assets are original compositions generated specifically for the game, and because Ludus Magna is a browsergame — not a commercial triple-A title — AI-generated art is an appropriate and efficient choice.
AI is a tool, not a replacement for creativity, and here it enables rapid iteration, new features, and constant improvements for players.

Do I need to know gladiator history or strategy games to enjoy it?

Not at all. The game includes a guided Prologue that teaches everything step-by-step: training, morale, economy, equipment, and combat. New players can learn at their own pace, while experienced strategy gamers will find advanced depth — from weapon synergies to trait builds and long-term Ludus planning.

How does combat work in the game?

Ludus Magna features two combat modes:

Auto-combat, where stats, traits, morale, and equipment determine the outcome.

Skill-based QTE combat, where player reactions and decision-making influence attacks, dodges, and critical hits.

Every gladiator has unique traits, specialization paths, strengths and weaknesses — making each fight a tactical puzzle rather than a numbers game.

Is Ludus Magna really free to play?

Yes — the game is fully playable in the browser with no installation or downloads. You can build your Ludus, train multiple gladiators, participate in tournaments, unlock new features, and progress through the story completely for free. Future expansions and cosmetics may be added, but the core gameplay will always remain accessible.

How much of the game is finished already?

Ludus Magna is fully playable and already includes the complete core loop: managing your Ludus, recruiting and training gladiators, running the economy, fighting in the arena, unlocking features through Fame, and progressing through a story-driven Prologue. The game is actively developed, with new systems (tournaments, expanded staff, deeper combat, PvP, and more) planned for the post-Prologue “real game.” What exists today is polished, stable, and feature-rich — and the world will continue to expand through frequent updates.

Can i play Ludus Magna also on my mobile device?

Yes. Since Version 1.2.0 Ludus Magna is fully compatible and playable on mobile Phones too. However - the QTE-Combat for mobile users is only available on desktop-games. On mobile the combat is calculated automatically without QTE-prompts.
