Arena Registry: Rival Houses Enter the Daily Contract Loop

Over the last few days, I have been working on a new social feature for Ludus Magna: the Arena Registry.

The goal behind this update is simple: other player houses should become more visible inside the actual core loop of the game. Not as a separate forum, not as a guild menu, not as an abstract leaderboard hidden somewhere else — but directly inside the Arena, where your daily decisions already happen.

With the Arena Registry, a Lanista can now register a gladiator as a frozen arena snapshot. That snapshot can then appear as a Rival House Contract for other players. In other words: your gladiators can now become part of the contract pool that other houses face.

Why This Feature Was Needed

One of the biggest challenges for Ludus Magna is making the world feel alive beyond your own Ludus.

The Public Arena was the first step in that direction. It allowed players to send gladiators into a wider arena circuit and let other houses encounter them asynchronously. But the daily contract loop was still mostly built around generated opponents. Easy, Medium, Hard, Mystery, Primus, Featured Duels — these all worked mechanically, but they did not always create the feeling that other real houses were competing in the same world.

I wanted to change that.

If Ludus Magna is about building a house, training memorable gladiators, and carving your name into the sands of Rome, then rival houses should not only appear on leaderboards. They should appear where it matters most: as dangerous opportunities in the Arena.

New: Register Gladiator Snapshots

Once a gladiator reaches the required level, he can be entered into the Arena Registry.

Registering a gladiator does not remove him from your Ludus. He is not locked, injured, or sent away. Instead, the game creates a frozen snapshot of his current arena record:

  • his name and portrait,
  • his class and level,
  • his current stats,
  • his equipment at the moment of registration,
  • his discipline skills,
  • his combat power,
  • and his house identity.

This snapshot becomes an official arena record. Other houses may then encounter this registered gladiator as a Rival House Contract in their "Special Contracts" Area under "Arena Contracts" (see screenshot).

New entries of Rival House Contracts may appear under "Special Contracts" in your daily routine.

This is important because the snapshot is not automatically updated. If your gladiator later gains levels, changes equipment, or develops new discipline skills, the registry version remains as it was. You can update the snapshot manually, but doing so costs Gold.

That makes registration a real decision. Do you register a promising fighter early, so he can start earning victories for your name? Or do you wait until he has better equipment and a stronger build?

Rival House Contracts

Registered gladiators can now appear in the Arena as Rival House Contracts.

These contracts are different from normal generated opponents. They represent real gladiator snapshots from another player’s Ludus. They show the rival house, the registered fighter, his portrait, his power, and his reward value.

They are not meant to replace normal contracts entirely. Easy, Medium, and Hard contracts still provide a reliable baseline. But over time, as more players register their fighters, the Arena should become less predictable and more personal.

You might open the Arena and find a gladiator from another house waiting for you. You might defeat him and earn Gold and Fame. Or you might lose, giving that registered fighter another victory in his public record.

That is exactly the kind of friction Ludus Magna needs: not just numbers against numbers, but houses crossing paths through the arena system itself.

Where to Find the Arena Registry

You can access the new Arena Registry directly from the Arena screen.

Find the Arena-registry button on your "Arena Contracts" screen top right corner.

Open the Arena and use the Arena Registry button in the upper area of the screen. This takes you to the new registry page, where you can see your available registry slots, register eligible gladiators, update existing snapshots, collect pending Gold, and review the fight history of your registered fighters.

Only eligible gladiators can be registered. In the current version, a gladiator must have reached the required level (3) before he can be entered into the Arena Registry. Once registered, his snapshot may begin appearing as a Rival House Contract for other players.

Your Gladiators Can Earn Gold While You Are Away

The Arena Registry also adds a small passive reward layer.

When one of your registered gladiator snapshots wins as a defender against another player, your Ludus earns pending Gold. This Gold is not paid instantly. It waits on the Arena Registry page until you return and collect it.

This creates a new reason to come back:

Did one of my registered gladiators fight while I was away?
Did he win?
Did another house defeat him?
Has my Ludus earned something from the arena circuit?

Losses do not cost you Gold or Fame in this first version. A defeat is recorded, but it does not punish your house economically. This was an intentional design choice. The feature should encourage players to register fighters, not make them afraid of participating.

Registry Slots and Updating Snapshots

Each Ludus starts with a limited number of Arena Registry slots. More slots can be unlocked with Gold, up to a maximum limit.

This keeps the system focused. You cannot register every fighter at once. You have to choose which gladiators represent your house in the wider arena circuit.

A gladiator can only have one active registry entry at a time. This prevents one strong fighter from flooding the contract pool multiple times. If you retire a registry entry and later register the same gladiator again, re-filing his arena record costs Gold. This closes a possible exploit where players could otherwise avoid update costs by retiring and re-registering the same fighter for free.

The idea is simple: slot management should remain flexible, but updating or re-filing the same gladiator’s public record should still be a meaningful decision.

Why This Makes the Arena Better

The Arena Registry improves Ludus Magna in several ways.

First, it adds more variety. Generated opponents are useful, but they can only go so far. Player-made gladiator snapshots bring different builds, different equipment, different discipline choices, and different house identities into the daily contract pool.

Second, it makes other houses more visible. You no longer only see rival players on a leaderboard or in a separate public arena screen. Their fighters can now appear directly in your Arena contracts.

Third, it gives gladiators a longer presence. A fighter is no longer important only when you actively select him for a fight. His registered version can continue building a record in the wider arena circuit.

And fourth, it adds a stronger sense of asynchronous rivalry. You do not need both players to be online at the same time. Your house can still cross paths with another house. Your gladiator can still defend your name. Another Lanista can still challenge what you have built.

What This Means for the Core Loop

Ludus Magna is built around preparation, risk, combat, recovery, and consequence.

The Arena Registry strengthens that loop without replacing it.

You still train your fighters. You still buy equipment. You still decide who fights, who rests, and who deserves investment. But now, those decisions can echo beyond your own screen. A gladiator you build today may become tomorrow’s obstacle for another player.

This makes equipment and discipline choices more meaningful. A strong build is not only useful for your own fights. It can become part of your public house identity.

Over time, I want the Arena to feel less like a list of generated tasks and more like a living circuit of rival houses, dangerous names, and memorable fighters.

What Comes Next

The Arena Registry is still new and will need balancing. You are invited to test this new feature in the current BETA-build, playable under https://play.ludus-magna.com

Several values are configurable and may change during beta testing:

  • how often Rival House Contracts appear,
  • how long they remain available,
  • how much Gold registered fighters can earn,
  • how strict the combat power matching should be,
  • and how quickly players should unlock additional registry slots.

The most important question now is how it feels in play.

Do Rival House Contracts appear often enough? Are the rewards attractive without becoming too generous? Does the system make the Arena feel more alive? Do registered gladiators create stories worth remembering?

This is the kind of feature that can grow naturally. Later, it could support revenge contracts, senator tournaments, weekly highlights, legendary retired records, or deeper rivalry between houses.

But for now, the goal is focused:

Make the daily Arena feel more alive by letting player houses become part of each other’s contract pool.

If you test the Arena Registry, please send feedback (via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or in our Discord). Ludus Magna should be a game where every house has a story — and where the strongest gladiators do not only fight for victory, but for the name of the Ludus they represent.

See you in the Arena, Lanista!
